How to Brush and Floss Your Child’s Teeth

Teaching your child proper oral hygiene is one of the most important habits you can instill in them. Brushing and flossing not only help prevent cavities and gum disease but also set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Here’s a step by step guide to help you brush and floss your child’s teeth effectively.

Baby toothbrush

Step 1: Start Early

Begin cleaning your baby’s mouth even before their first tooth appears. Use a soft, damp cloth or a silicone finger brush to gently wipe their gums after feedings. Once their first tooth erupts, switch to a baby toothbrush with soft bristles and a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).

Step 2: Choose the Right Tools

Make sure you’re using age appropriate dental tools. For brushing, choose a child sized toothbrush with soft bristles and a comfortable grip. For flossing, you can use traditional floss, floss picks, or pre threaded flossers designed for kids. These tools make flossing easier and more fun for young children.

Step 3: Brushing Basics

For children under 3 years old:

Brushing basics for children under 3 years old

  • Use a smear (rice sized amount) of fluoride toothpaste.

  • Hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle to their teeth and gums.

  • Gently brush all surfaces of the teeth, front, back, and chewing surfaces.

  • Brush for about two minutes, focusing on one section of the mouth at a time.

For children aged 3 and older:

  • Use a pea sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.

  • Teach your child to spit out the toothpaste after brushing.

  • Supervise their brushing until they can do it effectively on their own, usually around age 7 or 8.

Step 4: Make Brushing Fun

Encourage your child to enjoy brushing by making it a fun part of their routine. Here are some ideas:

Make brushing fun

  • Use a timer or a two minute song to ensure they brush long enough.

  • Let them pick a toothbrush with their favorite characters or colors.

  • Use apps or videos designed to make brushing exciting for kids.

Step 5: Flossing Fundamentals

Once your child’s teeth start touching, it’s time to introduce flossing. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most of it around your middle fingers and leaving an inch or two to work with.

  2. Gently slide the floss between your child’s teeth, curving it into a C shape around each tooth.

  3. Move the floss up and down to remove plaque and debris, being careful not to snap it into the gums.

  4. Repeat for all teeth, using a clean section of floss each time.

*For younger children, you may need to floss for them. As they get older, teach them how to floss independently.

Step 6: Create a Routine

Brush twice a day

Consistency is key to developing strong oral hygiene habits. Aim to brush your child’s teeth twice a day, in the morning and before bed, and floss at least once a day. Making this a non negotiable part of their daily routine helps it become second nature.

Step 7: Lead by Example

Brush and floss with your child

Kids often mimic what they see. Brush and floss your teeth alongside your child to model good habits. This not only reinforces the importance of oral hygiene but also turns it into a shared activity that you can enjoy together.

Step 8: Visit the Dentist Regularly

Schedule your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth erupts. Regular check ups allow the dentist to monitor their oral health, provide professional cleanings, and offer personalized tips for maintaining a healthy smile.
